Minor Site Update: “Science!”

Minor Site Update: “Science!”

As part of the slow-but steady process of upgrading the site’s organization – the better to support Architect of Worlds in particular – I’ve just created a new tag: science!

The purpose of this tag will be to focus on posts that are mostly about specific results in the scientific literature, as they pertain to world-building for fiction. Most of these will have obvious relevance to Architect of Worlds.

The architect of worlds tag will remain, but that tag will also include posts about the process of writing, editing, selling, and maintaining the book. If you’re mostly interested in reading what I’ve had to say about astronomy, exoplanetary science, and so on, look for the science! tag instead.

Yes, the exclamation point is required. If you like, read it in the voice of Magnus Pyke in mad-scientist mode.

“Architect of Worlds” Page Under Construction

“Architect of Worlds” Page Under Construction

With the imminent release of Architect of Worlds, I’m starting to rework the page for that project on this site.

First and foremost, the partial draft once offered from that page has been taken down. The release draft is significantly different, and at this point I want to encourage people to pick up the actual book once it’s available. I’m not going to take down any of the original blog posts in which I posted a very rough draft of the design sequence – if anyone wants to page through those, they’re welcome to it.

Meanwhile, moving forward I intend to use the project’s page to offer long-term support for the book: a place to ask questions, a (hopefully well-maintained) errata list, and a place to collect any blog posts I make about new science or more detailed world-design techniques. There’s some possibility I’ll be looking to produce a second edition of the book in five or six years, and the rebuilt page will be a good place to collect material for that project.

In the meantime, if you haven’t seen it already, here’s a link to the Ad Astra Games catalog page for the book. Pre-orders are under way!

Meanwhile, here’s a link to the first (glowing!) review the book has received, from Amazing Stories.

Updates to the Progress Bar(s)

Updates to the Progress Bar(s)

Just a quick note this evening, to point out that I’ve added a new progress-bar widget to the sidebar on this site. The “In Progress” section should now indicate progress both for layout for Architect of Worlds and for the first draft of Twice-Crowned. Those are the two major creative projects right now, and the ones for which I suspect readers and patrons are most interested in seeing the state of play.

The widgets are a little ugly at the moment, for which I apologize. At some point I think I’ll try to streamline that section and try for a neater appearance. For now, at least, the data are up where I can easily update them after each day’s work and my followers can keep track of how things are going.

Status Report (17 July 2022)

Status Report (17 July 2022)

Aside from working on Architect of Worlds as time permits, I’ve also been working on a first draft of the novel Twice-Crowned. That’s making enough good forward progress that I’m increasingly comfortable calling it my primary literary project at the moment. If you check out the sidebar on this site, you’ll notice that I’ve updated my “In Progress” widget to indicate where I am on word count for that. I’ll keep that up to date as I work, so you can get a sense for how well that project is going over the next few months.

Status Report (31 August 2021)

Status Report (31 August 2021)

Quick update this evening, since this is the last day of the month and I’m still hanging fire on a couple of tasks.

Most of the delay is that I just acquired a new desktop computer a week or so ago, and I’ve slowly been adjusting my work-flows and creative routine to fit. The new machine is much more powerful than the laptop I’ve been using for the last few years. It’s probably going to become my primary machine for graphic design, art, and cartography (as well as my main gaming machine). Meanwhile, my laptop will probably continue to be my primary writing platform. Transferring files and tasks over, and adjusting to the split between the two devices, has been taking up more time than I expected.

I did manage to polish up a novella and release that to my patrons earlier this month. At the moment I’m working on a book review and putting together a new incremental release for the Human Destiny setting bible and sourcebook. Unfortunately those two items are close-but-not-quite-finished and I don’t think I’ll have either of them out before midnight tonight.

I’ll post a more extensive planning message for September later this week, but the immediate plan is to get that indie novel read and reviewed ASAP, after which the Human Destiny update will come as soon as I can put all the pieces of that in some semblance of order. Possibly this weekend for that. Then I’ll be able to get started on new tasks for September.

Planning for June 2021

Planning for June 2021

The last few months have been very productive, and I think this pattern of posting a status report and priority list at the beginning of each month is helping. Not to mention that it’s likely to be useful information for my patrons, and anyone else who’s following my work.

May was a good month overall. I released an update to my Scorpius Reach setting bible, adding a fair amount of material to the initial draft. This gathered some good attention from the Traveller communities on Facebook and Reddit. I also released a minor-version update to the Architect of Worlds Introduction and Design Sequence document. Finally, I wrote and released the first draft of a completely new section of Architect of Worlds: the Working with Astronomical Data document.

I did not get any new fiction written, and I think I need to refocus on that in the coming month. Earlier this year I had a potential project to write and sell several stories, and for a while I was holding time and energy aside for that. Unfortunately, that seems to have fallen through, so I’m turning back to writing in my own original universes again for a while.

One very useful milestone happened this month. I’ve been developing my Scorpius Reach setting, not just as a test-bed for the Game of Empire rules, but also possibly as the backdrop for some serialized fiction to bring to market. Although the stories themselves are going to be entirely original to me, and I don’t plan to market them as anything but original fiction, there was still a potential IP problem there. I’ve been using the Traveller game rules to help develop the setting, and the “bible” for it is framed in terms of a Traveller universe. So I decided to approach Marc Miller, the owner and primary publisher of Traveller, and discuss how best to avoid stepping on his intellectual property. Once I described what I was planning to do, he immediately and graciously granted me permission to proceed without any concerns. So that’s a big potential obstacle out of the way. I plan to start writing the first Scorpius Reach serialized novel in June.

So here’s the priority list for June 2021. I’m reworking the format a little, to organize by a hierarchy of urgency first, rather than by overall project:

  • Top Priority, or the “this is how I’ll judge whether the month has been successful” level:
    • Architect of Worlds: Return to improvement and polishing of the Introduction and Design Sequence document, leading to a new minor-version release.
    • Krava’s Legend: Write a few more chapters of The Sunlit Lands.
    • Scorpius Reach: Write the first few chapters of a serialized novel to be published via Kindle Vella.
  • Second Priority, or the “work on this as time permits” level:
    • Architect of Worlds: Start work on a section describing the structure of the galaxy and of interstellar space, and providing guidelines on how to make maps for interstellar settings.
    • Architect of Worlds: Start work on a section of special cases and additional worldbuilding material that doesn’t fit into the design sequence.
    • Krava’s Legend: Write the first short story for the “reader magnet” collection.
    • Krava’s Legend: More research toward improvements to my release-and-marketing workflow.
    • Scorpius Reach: Start work on a third edition of the Game of Empire rules.
  • Back Burner, or the “work on this only if everything else gets blocked” level:
    • Human Destiny: Write a new short story for eventual collection and publication.
    • Human Destiny: Write a few thousand more words of the Cortex Prime sourcebook and setting bible.

For my patrons, this month’s free releases will almost certainly include a new minor-version release of the Architect of Worlds design sequence. This month’s charged release, if there is one, will probably be a block of new fiction from the Krava’s Legend and Scorpius Reach settings. I do hope to produce some new Architect of Worlds material this month, but there probably won’t be enough of that to bundle up as a release for my patrons, so maybe look for that in July.

As always, I’ll want to complete one or two book reviews for self-published fiction this month.

Watch this space for status reports, and if any of the above interests you, please consider signing up as a patron using the link in the sidebar.

A small administrative note: I spent some time this morning cleaning up the post tags on this site, merging a few tags and making sure they had consistent format. In particular, I merged all the tags that made any reference to my high-fantasy novel series into the krava’s legend tag. I also merged the tags that referred to the various Bios-series games by Phil Eklund into the bios tag. Might make the site a little easier to navigate.

Some Important Links

Some Important Links

Since I have a fair number of new readers these days, I thought it might be worthwhile to reinstate a few cross-links in the sidebar and point those out. (Thanks to Jürgen Hubert for indirectly encouraging me to overcome inertia and get this set up.)

There’s now an Important Links widget at the top of the sidebar. The links here will point you to other places on the Internet where I maintain a presence:

  • Patreon page. Patrons get links back to posts on this site, and (at least for now) one article or piece of short fiction each month, all for free. In some months, I make one charged release of at least 10,000 words of new content (excerpts from a novel in progress, draft world-building material, and so on). Charged releases are based on whatever I’m working on at the time – there’s no overarching theme. Patrons also get free copies of some or all of the work I self-publish, depending on their level of patronage.
  • DeviantArt page. This is where I’m likely to post any character art, cartography, or other visual art I produce in support of other projects. Some of that will also appear here, but that’s not guaranteed.
  • Amazon author page for John Alleyn. Exactly what it says on the tin. Here’s where you’ll find my more recent, self-published original fiction.
  • Amazon author page for Jon F. Zeigler. You’ll mostly find links to my non-fiction work here, especially old GURPS books that are still on sale via Amazon. Also, at least one short-story collection to which I contributed under my legal byline.
  • Fan Fiction archive. This points to my profile page on FanFiction.Net, which has its drawbacks but is the only place you can find all of the fan-fiction I wrote during that period of my creative career (roughly 2012 through 2018). Mostly Mass Effect stories, along with a bit of fantasy fiction in several settings.

All of these links should be working properly, but if any of them look strange to you, drop me a note and I’ll see if I can fix them.

Minor Site Reorganization

Minor Site Reorganization

I’ve just finished doing some minor shuffling of pages on this site:

The Pages widget has been eliminated from the sidebar, but you should be able to access the major sections of the site from the menu bar at the top. I’m not sure anyone was using the widget anyway.

This process may have broken a link or two, but you should be able to reacquire without too much trouble. Hopefully, this should make navigation a bit easier in the future.

R-Day Plus One Week: Site Changes and Reviews

R-Day Plus One Week: Site Changes and Reviews

Well, The Curse of Steel has been on the market for about a week now. Sales have not been overwhelming, but I didn’t expect them to be. In any case, the book has already earned me more in royalties than my last two ventures into self-publishing put together. This is a slow business, which doesn’t reward you for obsessively checking your KDP reports.

(Have I been obsessively checking my KDP reports? Yes, yes I have.)

So, on to next steps.

I’ve started work on the first draft of the next novel in the series, The Sunlit Lands. Progress on that can be tracked in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, I’ve been working on promotion for The Curse of Steel. One thing I’ve become aware of is that there’s a whole ecology of reviewers for new books, and especially for self-published books. New books that don’t have many professional or customer reviews don’t do as well, but as you might expect there are always more new books coming out than there are available reviewers.

After thinking about that problem for a while, I’ve decided to add a new thread to this blog: reviews of new self-published fiction.

I’m going to try to have at least one substantive review of an indie novel or series per month. Those reviews will be posted as blog entries here, and if the book(s) being reviewed are being published on Amazon I’ll cross-post the reviews there too. Look for the first of these by the end of October – I’ve already found a very promising novel series that will almost certainly get a review.

This is something of a departure for me; this blog has never done many reviews in the past. It will involve some formal work over the next few days as I set things up. I’ll have to develop and post a review policy, and I’ll also be advertising this blog on some of the review-clearinghouse sites to attract more attention to the project.

As another point, I’ve just taken some steps to (hopefully) make this site a little easier to navigate. You’ll notice the white top-bar now provides several menu options. These links will take you to some of the most important (or popular) pages on the site, notably the Architect of Worlds landing page. I’ll be expanding that menu a bit over the next few days, possibly converting a couple of the items into drop-downs to further improve navigation. There may be some tweaks and additions to some of the pages as well. Feedback is welcome as to ways to improve all of this functionality.

Sharrukin’s Palace Now Secure

Sharrukin’s Palace Now Secure

Just a quick note: at the suggestion of a reader, I’ve moved this site to operate under secure HTTP with an SSL certificate. That was surprisingly easy to set up, so I’m kind of kicking myself for not getting it done some time ago.

Old links should still work through a redirect, but an HTTPS URL is probably preferred from now on. Please drop me a line if anything doesn’t seem to be working properly.

Note that the old Sharrukin’s Archive site, or what’s left of it, is probably still non-secure, but that site is going away at some point anyway.
