Seminar Slides for Philcon 2025
I’ve just pushed a copy of the slides I’ll be using on Saturday, 22 November, for a seminar at Philcon 2025. The title is “Foundations of Worldbuilding: Getting the Astronomy Right,” and it’s a quick review of some recent results from exoplanetary science and the GAIA astrometry mission. Feel free to pull down a copy of the PDF for yourself.

Interesting stuff. I recently wrote an SF adventure set on a tidally-locked planet of a Red Dwarf star, but I hadn’t considered the problem of red-light photosynthesis. (I did consider social & meteorological consequences).
From a RPG point of view, an interesting question is the ratio of marginally-habitable planets to fully-habitable planets. If there are a lot more marginally-habitable planets, expect to see settlement of planets with problems, which is good fodder for RPG adventure.
I am going to be in Philadelphia that weekend at Pax Unplugged, not Philcon.
